Instant Pot Oil Free Refried Beans – The easiest, tasty and versatile refried beans made in an instant pot(pressure cooker). These beans take less than an hour from start to creamy finish and their uses are endless. Made with no lard or fat they are full of flavor and packed with nutrients.
Pressure cooking helps preserve the nutrients in the beans and also makes them easier to digest. Because beans can be gassy when cooked, using a pressure cooker can help break that down the sugars in the beans so they do not produce any unpleasant side effects. The other benefit of using a pressure cooker is that you don’t have to pre soak your beans, you still can if you remember and that will cut down on the cooking time, but you don’t have to. You can also use a quick soak method by covering the beans with fresh water and bringing them to a boil over medium heat. Allow to boil for three minutes and then shut off. But again, the great thing about the pressure cooker you don’t need any presoaking to have fast, delicious and easily digestible beans.
- Mexican Oregano- if you can find this regular oregano will do.
- Onion- White or cooking onion is fine here.
- Garlic – We want to layer the flavors and add as much as you like
- Pinto beans, cleaned and sorted, this recipes is also great with black beans
- Cumin- This is optional, I like the flavor but typical Mexican Refried Beans doesn’t have cumin in it.

Oil Free Refried Beans
Equipment
- 1 Vitamix
Ingredients
- 4 cups dry pinto beans
- 2 tsp mexican oregano
- 3 garlic cloves
- ½ yellow onion, chopped
- 1 ½ tsp salt
- 2 tsp cumin
- 7 cups water
- 1 tbsp lime juice
Instructions
- In a pressure cooker, add the beans, water, onion, garlic and spices except the lime. Seal the pot and cook on 40 minutes.Allow to naturally release for 15 minutes or longer. Then release any pressure left in the cooker.
- Transfer the beans to the high speed blender, add salt and about 1 cup of the bean water. Blend, you may need to use tamper to process. We like our refried beans smooth and creamy. If you like them thicker add less water to start.
- You can use an immerse blender but I would strain out most of the water to start and slowly add back in. I find using a high speed blender gives the smoothest beans.
