If you’re looking for a natural, healthier way to sweeten your recipes, date paste is your new best friend! Made from whole dates, this simple yet versatile sweetener is packed with nutrients and free of refined sugars. While medjool dates are often used for their caramel-like flavor, we’ve opted for deglet dates—a more budget-friendly choice that works just as beautifully.
Why Switch to Date Paste?
Unlike regular sugar or artificial sweeteners, date paste is a whole-food sweetener that retains all the fiber, vitamins, and minerals naturally found in dates. Here’s why you’ll want to swap your sugar bowl for a jar of date paste:
- No Refined Sugar: Avoid the energy spikes and crashes associated with white sugar.
- Packed with Fiber: Supports digestion and helps regulate blood sugar levels.
- Rich in Nutrients: Dates are loaded with potassium, magnesium, and B vitamins.
- Natural Sweetness: Perfect for baking, smoothies, dressings, and more.
Why We Chose Deglet Dates
While medjool dates are popular, deglet dates are just as effective in making date paste—and they come with a few extra perks:
- Budget-Friendly: Deglet dates are more affordable, making them great for larger batches.
- Mild Sweetness: Their subtle flavor blends seamlessly into recipes without overpowering.
- Widely Available: You can find them at most grocery stores, often in bulk.
Benefits of Dates
Dates are more than just a natural sweetener—they’re a powerhouse of nutrition:
- Energy Boost: Their natural sugars make dates a great pre- or post-workout snack.
- High in Potassium: Helps maintain healthy blood pressure and supports muscle function.
- Rich in Antioxidants: Protects cells from oxidative stress and inflammation.
- Promotes Digestion: The fiber in dates aids in keeping your digestive system running smoothly.
How to Use Date Paste
This versatile sweetener works in a variety of recipes:
- Baking Substitute: Use in cookies, muffins, or energy bars for natural sweetness.
- Smoothie Sweetener: Blend a spoonful into your morning smoothie for added flavor.
- Sauces and Dressings: Whisk into vinaigrettes or BBQ sauce for a hint of sweetness.
- Breakfast Boost: Stir into oatmeal, spread on toast, or drizzle over pancakes.

Date Paste
Equipment
- 1 bowl
Ingredients
- 12 oz Deglet dates, pitted and soaked
- 2-4 cups water
Instructions
- In a large bowl, add the pitted dates. I use deglet because they are cheaper.
- Add boiling water and soak for 30 minutes depending on how dry they are. Drain but reserve the soaking water.
- Add dates to food processor and 1/4 cup of the reserved water. Process until a smooth, continue to add liquid until the consistency you prefer. More liquid more of a date syrup, less date paste.
- Store in airtight container in fridge or 1 month in the freezer.
