If you love crunchy, savory snacks but want something wholesome, budget-friendly, and easy to make, these homemade WFPB seed crackers are going to become a favorite in your kitchen!
These are my favorite whole-food, plant-based crackers. They’re delicious, packed with fiber, healthy fats, and nutrients, and made with simple ingredients you can actually pronounce. No oil, no refined flour, no unnecessary additives, and no expensive store-bought crackers with a long list of ingredients.
The best part? They’re incredibly easy to make, and you can customize the seasonings to suit your taste.
I love serving these crackers with creamy hummus, which is my personal favorite, but they’re equally delicious on their own for a quick snack.
And a little warning: they keep well if they last that long!
Why You’ll Love These Homemade WFPB Crackers
- Whole-food, plant-based: Made from seeds, seasonings, and water.
- Oil-free and gluten-free: No added oil or wheat flour.
- Fiber-rich: Flax and the other seeds provide dietary fiber to support digestive health and help keep you satisfied.
- Nutrient-dense: A variety of seeds brings together plant-based protein, unsaturated fats, vitamins, and minerals.
- Budget-friendly: Making your own crackers can be more economical than buying specialty seed crackers.
- Customizable: Use your favorite seasonings, from garlic and herbs to spicy Cajun.
These crackers are a wonderful example of how eating a healthy WFPB diet doesn’t have to mean giving up crunchy, satisfying snacks.
Ingredients for Homemade Seed Crackers
Every ingredient has a purpose, and that’s what I love about this recipe. You’re getting flavor, crunch, and nutrition without unnecessary extras.
1. Whole Flax Seeds
Flax seeds are the star of these crackers! They help bind the ingredients together when soaked in water, creating that wonderful crispy, crunchy texture without needing oil or flour.
Flax seeds are especially rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid, and dietary fiber. They also contain lignans, naturally occurring plant compounds with antioxidant properties.
Nutritional benefits:
- Fiber to support regular digestion and help keep you feeling full.
- Plant-based omega-3 ALA, which supports normal cardiovascular health.
- Magnesium and phosphorus, important for bones, muscles, and energy metabolism.
- Thiamin (vitamin B1), which helps your body convert food into energy.
- Copper and manganese, which support normal connective tissue and antioxidant enzyme function.
Whole flax seeds absorb water and develop a gel-like coating, helping hold the crackers together. Grinding flax makes its nutrients, particularly ALA, more accessible, but whole flax seeds work beautifully for this recipe’s texture.
2. Sunflower Seeds
Sunflower seeds add a delicious nutty flavor and a satisfying crunch. They’re also a great source of vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps protect cells from oxidative damage.
Sunflower seeds contain:
- Vitamin E, which supports healthy cells and normal immune function.
- Magnesium, important for muscle and nerve function.
- Selenium, which contributes to thyroid hormone metabolism and antioxidant defenses.
- Copper, phosphorus, and manganese, which support various metabolic processes.
- Plant-based protein and fiber to make these crackers more satisfying.
I love how sunflower seeds add texture and a mild, buttery flavor without adding any oil.
3. Pumpkin Seeds (Pepitas)
Pumpkin seeds bring a lovely crunch and are nutritional powerhouses in their own right.
They’re particularly well known for their magnesium, zinc, and iron content.
- Magnesium: Supports normal muscle and nerve function, energy production, and bone health.
- Zinc: Plays a role in immune function, wound healing, and DNA synthesis.
- Iron: Helps your body produce hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood.
- Phosphorus: Helps maintain healthy bones and supports energy metabolism.
- Plant-based protein: Contributes to tissue maintenance and repair.
Adding pumpkin seeds is a delicious way to increase the variety of nutrients in your homemade crackers.
4. Hemp Seeds
Hemp seeds, or hemp hearts, add a delicate, slightly nutty flavor and a wonderful nutritional boost.
They’re a source of plant-based protein and contain all nine essential amino acids, making hemp a complete protein source.
Hemp seeds provide:
- Plant-based protein to support muscle maintenance and repair.
- Magnesium, which contributes to normal muscle function.
- Iron and zinc, important for oxygen transport and immune health.
- Phosphorus, which supports healthy bones and energy metabolism.
- Unsaturated fats, including omega-3 ALA and omega-6 fatty acids.
I love including a variety of seeds in my recipes because each one contributes a different combination of nutrients.
Together, flax, sunflower, pumpkin, and hemp seeds create a cracker that’s delicious and nutrient-dense.
5. Pink Salt
A little pink salt brings out the natural flavors of the seeds and gives these crackers that classic savory taste.
Pink salt is primarily sodium chloride, just like regular table salt. Its pink color comes from trace minerals, but the quantities are generally too small to provide a meaningful nutritional advantage over ordinary salt.
Sodium is an essential electrolyte that helps regulate fluid balance and supports normal nerve and muscle function. However, too much sodium can contribute to elevated blood pressure in some people, so I recommend using salt to taste and keeping the amount modest.
6. Mrs. Dash Garlic & Herb Seasoning
This is my go-to seasoning for adding loads of flavor without relying on oil or excess salt.
Mrs. Dash Garlic & Herb seasoning brings together savory garlic and herbs to make these crackers extra delicious.
Garlic and herbs contain naturally occurring plant compounds, including antioxidants. Garlic is known for its sulfur-containing compounds, while herbs can contribute small amounts of various phytonutrients.
The exact vitamin and mineral content depends on the blend and the amount used, so I think of this seasoning primarily as a way to add flavor and make healthy food more enjoyable.
And the best part? You can easily switch it up!
Change Up the Seasonings!
One of the things I love most about making crackers at home is that you can make them your own.
My husband likes to make his crackers spicy with Cajun seasoning, and they’re delicious!
Here are a few other combinations to try:
Here are a few other combinations to try:
- Italian-inspired: Italian herbs, garlic, and onion powder.
- Spicy: Cajun seasoning, smoked paprika, or chili flakes.
- Everything bagel: Everything bagel seasoning with sesame seeds.
- Rosemary garlic: Dried rosemary, garlic powder, and black pepper.
Just be mindful that some seasoning blends already contain salt, so adjust the pink salt accordingly.
How to Serve Your Homemade Seed Crackers
These crackers are delicious straight out of the oven once cooled, but here are some of my favorite ways to enjoy them:
- With homemade oil-free hummus — my personal favorite!
- Alongside a bowl of vegetable soup.
- With homemade vegan dips and spreads.
- As a crunchy afternoon snack when you’re craving something savory.
I love having healthy snacks ready to go in the kitchen. When you have satisfying options available, it’s so much easier to stay consistent with your WFPB lifestyle.
Storage Tips
Once completely cooled, store your crackers in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Make sure they’re fully crisp and dry before storing to prevent moisture from softening them.
They should keep well for about 1–2 weeks when properly dried and stored, although the exact shelf life depends on moisture and storage conditions. If they soften, you can crisp them up again in a low oven.
But honestly, in our house, they rarely last that long!
