Homemade DIY Dishwasher Tabs: Simple, Natural & Plastic-Free

Making your own DIY dishwasher tabs is a step back into simpler times—when cleaning products were effective, affordable, and made from ingredients people actually recognized. By going back to the old days, we can clean our homes without synthetic fragrances, unnecessary plastic, or harsh chemicals.

These homemade dishwasher tabs are healthy, low-waste, and made from natural ingredients that can actually be pronounced. They work beautifully while supporting a more mindful, eco-friendly lifestyle.

Why Make Your Own Dishwasher Tabs?

Store-bought dishwasher pods often come with:

  • Plastic wrapping that contributes to microplastic pollution
  • Artificial fragrances and dyes
  • Long ingredient lists full of chemicals you can’t pronounce
  • Higher long-term costs

Making your own dishwasher tabs allows you to:

  • Reduce plastic waste
  • Save money
  • Control exactly what goes into your home
  • Avoid unnecessary chemicals
  • Embrace a more traditional, self-sufficient way of living

This is truly cleaning the old-fashioned way—simple, effective, and intentional.

The Power of Simple, Natural Ingredients

Each ingredient in these DIY dishwasher tabs plays an important role. Together, they work to clean dishes effectively without leaving harmful residues behind.

Washing Soda

Washing soda (sodium carbonate) is a natural mineral compound used for cleaning for generations.

  • Softens water
  • Breaks down grease and food residue
  • Boosts overall cleaning power

It’s a cornerstone ingredient in many traditional cleaning recipes.

Citric Acid

Citric acid is naturally derived from citrus fruits.

  • Cuts through hard water buildup
  • Helps remove cloudy residue from dishes
  • Boosts shine and cleanliness

Citric acid works especially well alongside washing soda to balance minerals in the water.

Coarse Salt

Coarse salt helps with:

  • Gentle abrasion to remove stuck-on food
  • Softening water
  • Preventing mineral buildup in the dishwasher

Salt has been used in cleaning for centuries and adds strength to this simple formula.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide acts as a natural oxygen-based cleaner.

  • Helps lift stains
  • Breaks down organic residue
  • Supports sanitation without harsh chemicals

It decomposes into water and oxygen, making it a cleaner option for home use when used properly.

Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon essential oil provides more than just a fresh scent.

  • Naturally deodorizes
  • Helps cut grease
  • Leaves dishes smelling clean and fresh

It also brings a bright, uplifting aroma—no artificial fragrances needed.

How These Ingredients Work Together

When combined, these ingredients create a powerful yet gentle cleaning tab:

  • Washing soda tackles grease
  • Citric acid and salt address hard water and residue
  • Hydrogen peroxide boosts cleaning performance
  • Lemon essential oil enhances freshness

The result is clean, sparkling dishes without plastic, dyes, or synthetic chemicals.

Better for Your Home & the Planet

Homemade dishwasher tabs are:

  • Plastic-free
  • Budget-friendly
